You are a new manager, or an experienced one. An executive, or a senior leader. Or you are on your way to one of those and you want more from the role than it currently asks of you. The competency model has taken you as far as it goes, and the situation in front of you is sitting on something underneath it: a role that has fused with the person holding it, anxiety that belongs to the whole system rather than to any one person carrying it. You are being asked to hold more than the framework names.
The Real Task is a one-page field card for exactly that moment. It separates the task you were handed from the task the system actually gave you, and gives you a way to name it out loud.
